Heads up - CryptoLocker virus

We’re seeing via our local SMBiT Professional network at least one small business a week being impacted by the CryptoLocker virus.  It is a virus that encrypts Office documents on your local computer as well as files on the network so that you can no longer open them.  Once infected, you will get a popup saying your files are encrypted and demanding a ransom to unlock them.

The only recovery is to restore from backup.

Be very careful in opening up any attachment as most report that it was a .exe file hidden inside a zip attachment to a FedEx or UPS shipping notice, or an email seeming to come from your bank.

While we have filters on your email, it’s still extremely important to be careful.

We can additionally put in place a measure to reduce the ability of accidentally launching this from a workstation should it make its way into your systems.

We’d suggest forwarding this on to everyone in the company.
